Hannibal was also fully aware of each infantry unit’s individual strengths and weaknesses. With these aspects of his infantry clearly in mind, Hannibal prepared an infantry line that would support his plan and give it the best possible chance of success against the overwhelmingly large force which the Romans, Etruscans, and Samnites had assembled. On the left and right flanks of his infantry line, Hannibal positioned his cavalry to counteract and defeat the Roman cavalry. Then, working in from both the left and the right sides, Hannibal stationed his Iberian heavy infantry units. These were men who were armed and equipped with the gear and weapons of the Roman legionaries whom Hannibal’s Carthaginians had already defeated. The Iberians were skilled soldiers and battle-hardened veterans, which meant they were also disciplined. These men would stand, and they would fight.
